Appeal
A defendant can appeal a guilty verdict to a higher level court called an appellate court. The appellate court will not retry the case, but will instead investigate charges that the original trial was improperly conducted, evidence was improperly introduced, the judge acted improperly or that the jury made an error. The appellate court may reverse a verdict if it finds that the procedures were not correctly followed or that serious errors were made that materially effected the original outcome.
